Chapter Seventeen

Finally, the day arrived; it was one of those perfect May days. The sun was warm and the hedgerows were lush with growth. Hawthorn hedges were full of white blossoms, the cow parsley was waving in the warm breeze and everywhere was a sea of green and white. The late spring sun was waking up this season’s butterflies and the bees were already busy harvesting all the new nectar. Best of all, there was no rain forecast.

Ari’s sisters had arrived the night before and were in high spirits. Listening to the laughter filling the rooms and corridors, Ari realised just how much she had missed this. The London contingent arrived around ten, in three minibuses. They piled out of the vans, in front of the house. Lots of the older generation were in their finest threads for a celebration; silks and waxed cottons, wrapped headscarves and brightly jewelled colours. Ari and her sisters’ generation were in a range of outfits blending western and home, and their children all wore the customary uniform of jeans and hoodies, regardless of gender. Within seconds the sound levels went through the roof as everyone greeted each other with shouts of wonder at the size of Hiverton Manor and how good everyone looked. It had only been a few months but there was so much to catch up on. Ari selected two of the teenagers and told them they were in charge of the little ones. Having done a grand tour of the house, everyone then headed down to the pavilion and helped with the setting up and getting the pots and pans on.

Dickie had deliberately left things to be set up at the last minute. She thought if everyone was mucking in to help lend a hand, then they would all knit together that much quicker.

By two o’clock the party was in full swing and Ari was delighted to discover that she didn’t have any nerves because the party had been slowly building around her for hours. It had sort of sneaked up on her as she had been meeting new people in dribs and drabs. She was also thrilled to see how well her old and new lives were blending.

The little ones had grown into a tribe of superheroes, princesses, and every sort of fancy dress in between; several mothers were now keeping an eye on them and laughing together. Ari grinned when she realised that by the end of the day her old neighbours were going to know her new neighbours better than she did. The music played via the tannoy was an eclectic mix of old and new, and some of the teenagers had taken control and plugged their playlists in and were taking requests.

Ari turned towards the direction of the car park where a loud shout from the children went up. One of the fathers had also arrived in fancy dress. In a cape and a mask, he was pretending to be terrorising them as they ran around him, shouting and poking him.
